Rachel Harrison LCPC, NCC, our CEO and Owner.TSMD understands trauma, and knows how to treat it. With office locations in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, as well as TeleHealth capabilities, clients are paired with therapists near them who are specially trained in trauma treatment modalities. TSMD places a specific focus on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy because it is a highly effective trauma treatment with impressive client results.
EMDR gives individuals a way to reprocess their trauma without having to relive or retell it several times. Using bilateral stimulation to help reprocess the traumatic event, clients are able to change the way their bodies respond to trauma. TSMD clinicians are all trained in EMDR in combination with other modalities, and are uniquely positioned to help people work through their trauma using evidence-based methods that have changed lives.
It’s not just TSMD’s EMDR expertise that separates it from the rest, however. This company believes in starting from the very beginning when it comes to being trauma-informed, and this means engaging and educating their staff, peers, and community about trauma and how to become more trauma aware and informed.
What makes Trauma Specialists different from most practices is that their entire staff, both clinical and administrative, are all trained in trauma awareness. “All of our staff from billing specialists to clinicians are trained to have a common basic understanding of trauma and appropriate, trauma-informed language to support our clients’ healing,” said TSMD’s Business Development Director, Katie Honeywell. “Not many practices have a common theory as an empirical foundation, while also excelling in specialties. This is why many folks are referred to us when they feel stuck.”
TSMD recognizes that one practice can’t treat everyone who needs mental health care, so they created a sister company, Trauma Specialists Training Institute. TSTI’s primary function is to provide training in EMDR and other trauma-specific topics and treatments to clinicians from anywhere in the world. In this way, TSMD has been able to improve access to effective trauma care across the United States and abroad.
As part of their goal to spread knowledge about trauma and mental health, Trauma Specialists of Maryland is proud to be heavily engaged in the communities they serve when it comes to education, awareness, and improving access to care. In partnership with a variety of non-profit organizations, TSMD has been able to host events that educate the local population about trauma, ranging from equine therapy to sensory gardening. In this way, TSMD has been able to improve general knowledge about trauma throughout the areas where they have offices. They also have active partnerships with several school districts, serving in advisory and hands-on roles when it comes to trauma in the student population.

Taking this community work a step further, TSMD has also worked with the Delaware state government on an initiative to make Delaware a trauma-informed state. This work includes training clinicians in EMDR, working with healthcare workers to address their own trauma in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and more. TSMD staff serve as advisors and members of various local task forces and panels that aim to address trauma in underserved populations and victims of traumatic crimes.
Concurrently, TSMD is working on a grant project with the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to treat child survivors of sexual assault and provide EMDR training to clinicians in the state.
In addition to their current offerings, Trauma Specialists is currently laying the groundwork for adding more state-of-the-art treatment options for its clients, including the possibility of adding neurofeedback therapy and virtual reality therapy. This company is always looking at the future of their industry, and trying to find ways to harness the power of mental health research and technology to improve the care they can offer clients.
In the ever-changing field of mental health, Trauma Specialists of Maryland continues to make a name for itself by being an active thought leader in the industry and consistently honing its craft. The future is bright for this company, as it works to heal trauma in every way possible, and spreads knowledge about expert trauma treatment far and wide.
